Refit for China's aircraft carrier

The aircraft carrier Varyag is seen under renovation at a shipyard in her home port of Dalian in northeast China's Liaoning Province yesterday. She is being refitted ahead of another sea trial before serving her new role as a research and training platform in China after a successful maiden voyage last August. The carrier is expected to be officially commissioned in the Chinese Navy in August and will be given a Chinese name at a ceremony in October. It will be capable of carrying around 30 Chinese J-15 fighters and helicopters and have a crew of around 2,000. All weapons and radar systems and other equipment on board have been made in China. The Soviet Union began construction on the vessel in 1985 but after the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991, Ukraine took control of the ship and sold it to China in 1998.
