There was a special guest seen over The Hudson River besides the flurry of ferries this morning.
As part of an aerial survey flight for the U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron “Blue Angels”, two F/A-18 Hornet Fighter Jets conducted test runs over the Hudson River between the George Washington and Verrazano Bridges around 10:20 a.m. this morning.
The aircraft conducted passes as low as 500 feet above ground level and at speeds approaching 345 miles per hour in order to familiarize and evaluate a potential flight course for the upcoming US Navy War of 1812 commemoration during this year’s Fleet Week celebration in May.
The Verrazano and George Washington Bridges served as entry and exit points to the course the two aircraft flew and turnaround points for the flight.
The two aircraft departed Republic Airfield in Farmindagle, N.Y. and conducted two passes over the Hudson River, one north and one south, between 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.
The flight was visible from all locations along the Hudson River in Hudson County.
Even with a stiff cold wind that was present off the river, a few individuals stood on Pier A in Hoboken this morning to catch the low-level flight.
There will be another opportunity to catch the Blue Angels over the Hudson River from Hoboken when they conduct the official flight to commemorate the War of 1812 during Fleet Week.
